HELLO!
This edition contains information about upcoming events along with a few short ‘snapshots’ of recent events.
We’ve also included links to info about recent news headlines for the waste and resource sector.
AWARE AGM - 10 SEPTEMBER 2008
Most important is the notification of our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday September 10th.
This years AGM will be at Melbourne Zoo in one of their lovely function rooms. Word is that walking through the Zoo at dusk is an experience not to be missed!
Please diarise the date and watch for more details coming to you by email shortly.
How to be even more AWARE
Consider joining our executive committee...it’s your chance to get involved in running the association.
Help us deliver the events that are known for giving waste and resource educators networking opportunities and great information.
Meetings are held bi monthly—it’s an easy commitment (even I can manage it!).
If you’d like to join the committee, fill out the a nomination form attached to this email.
EYES ON EMISSIONS
Aware members were kindly invited by the Metro Waste Group to their EdNet meeting on Tuesday 22nd July to hear Mike Ritchie of Sita speak about emissions trading and how it might impact the waste industry, and for a tour of the SITA facility at Hampton Park.
Mike Ritchie’s exceptionally informative presentation about Cap and Trade, the National Emissions Trading Scheme and their impact on the waste industry kept us enthralled for hours – no mean feat given we were all keen to hear about and see SITA’s best practice landfill in action.
I now have a slightly less limited understanding of how the NETS is going to work, a little bit more knowledge about Cap and Trade, and photographs of a best practice landfill in action.
Thanks to MWMG for having us along.
ANOTHER FINE EVENT
YOU’VE GOT ME IN TO
Judith Alcorn—President
Surprises awaited the 54 people from all over Victoria who gathered at Red Scooter, East St Kilda for the launch of Awareness 2007/08 Journal and a “Maximise the message Marketing communications for educators” workshop.
Little did they know that Arnold Schwarzenegger would be launching the journal - his environmental “knowledge” left a lot of people stunned!
The workshop that followed the launch and breakfast was led by Bronwyn Sutton, Marketing Director extraordinaire for Kenmore-DMP Pty Ltd. She was ably assisted by Ian Barnes, Ecovision Co-ordinator at Whitehorse City Council, Sarah Sustainability (aka Sarah Nickels), and Liz Franzmann from Sustainability Victoria – the major sponsor.
The organisers of the Sustainable Living Festival then popped up to tell us about their project on Sustainable Events with Swinburne University and the Red Scooter Manager gave a potted history of the venue and its green initiatives.
People brought along an idea for a real life education program and were able to work with others to plan a campaign using the core principles they had just learnt.
After a productive morning many of the participants had a ready made campaign to take away – no wonder the lunch disappeared quickly – it had been hard work!
Bronwyn deserves a medal for her brilliant organising to arrange the event!
More than 60% of attendees have returned a survey form – please give us your feedback if you haven’t already so we can continue to bring you valuable events in future.

AWAREness 2008. Start thinking NOW!
Doesn’t the latest edition of AWAREness journal look great?
Do you want your project to feature in next year’s Journal?
Then it’s time to start planning the article you would like featured!
This annual publication provides ‘snapshots’ of innovative waste and resource education initiatives. It’s a record of the great work being done by educators, including consultants, and a chance to share inspiration and experiences.
A couple of high resolution ‘snapshots’ will convey your message more clearly. Ask someone to take photos when you are running an event or set up some shots with people doing things for the environment that help show what your initiative is about.

IN THE NEWS
Climate Change
Carbon Pollution Reduction Schemes, National Emissions Trading Schemes, National Greenhouse Energy and Reporting Schemes have been well and truly in the news recently.
Emissions caps and the effect any trading scheme might have on business, industry and the general public is covered in the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme Green Paper released in early July. Visit http://www.greenhouse.gov.au
The Garnaut Review into climate change and it’s impact on Australia has also released its first draft (‘Green Paper’).
